Global financial institutions completed the first live tokenised deposit transaction on a blockchain-based ledger this week, marking a significant step toward interoperable digital currencies. HSBC and Standard Chartered executed the exchange via Swift’s new system, bringing together 17 global banks to pilot the technology.

Swift launched its blockchain-based ledger system around a month ago, and the latest transaction demonstrates its immediate utility. HSBC’s head of digital currencies, Lewis Sun, described the event as a “landmark moment for the promise of tokenised deposits.” The settlement occurred through the exchange of payment messages between the two banks via the Swift ledger.

Sun noted that the initiative “demonstrates how digital money issued by banks can be interoperable across institutions while maintaining the integrity and regulatory oversight of the existing financial ecosystem.” The pilot involved 17 global financial institutions, signaling broad interest in moving fiat deposits onto distributed ledgers.

For commercial clients, the ability to move funds across borders as programmable tokens could drastically reduce settlement times and counterparty risk. Currently, cross-border transfers often rely on legacy messaging systems that settle days after the trade is executed. A blockchain-based ledger allows the transaction to settle instantly, provided both parties agree on the terms. This shift could force traditional correspondent banking networks to adapt or risk losing market share to faster, tokenized alternatives.

Stripe has agreed to acquire large language model aggregator OpenRouter for more than $7 billion. The purchase price, cited by Bloomberg sources, represents a significant increase from the $1.3 billion valuation reported during OpenRouter’s Series B funding round in May.

OpenRouter raised $113 million in that May funding round, led by Alphabet’s independent growth fund, CapitalG. The deal comes shortly after Stripe launched its Agentic Commerce Suite in December 2025 and formed a partnership with Google in April 2026 to embed token-metered billing systems within the Gemini app.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) granted preliminary conditional approval for World Liberty Financial to establish a de novo national trust bank in the United States. The crypto company, backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, submitted the application in January of this year.

The newly approved entity, World Liberty Trust Company National Association (WLTC), will focus on the issuance, reserve backing, and redemption of the dollar-backed stablecoin USD1. Before taking on direct management of USD1, WLTC must designate an internal audit manager and maintain a minimum of $20 million in capital, with at least $10 million held in eligible liquid assets.

Gary Hoffman is stepping down as group chair of Monzo after seven years, during which the digital bank became one of the UK’s most valuable lenders. Hoffman will depart in early September and will be replaced on an interim basis by Karen Peacock, a non-executive director since October 2025.

He will remain available to support Peacock until the end of the year while the company searches for a permanent replacement. On his decision to leave Monzo, Hoffman stated that “while it was tempting to stay for my full nine-year term … this feels like the natural time to depart as Monzo pursues its next phase of growth.”

HomeTrust Bancshares in North Carolina plans to acquire Richmond-headquartered Blue Ridge Bankshares via an all-stock transaction valued at around $448.1 million. The deal will expand HomeTrust’s presence in neighboring Virginia.

HomeTrust currently operates 30 locations across North Carolina, South Carolina, East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and Georgia, and recorded $4.4 billion in total assets in June 2026. The merger is expected to close early in the first quarter of 2027, pending stockholder and regulatory approval.

Large language models are changing how software interacts with users, and AI reshapes broker-client trends worldwide. Meanwhile, instant payments reshape global finance, enabling faster transactions than traditional methods. This evolution reflects a broader trend toward automation in financial services. Stripe’s acquisition of OpenRouter highlights the increasing value placed on AI integration in business operations. The blockchain transaction between HSBC and Standard Chartered further demonstrates this technological shift.
