AIG Expands Cyber Insurance to Cover Cloud Outages

American International Group (AIG) introduced a new parametric insurance product designed to address cloud service interruptions, aiming to provide businesses with faster access to funds when systems fail. This approach allows companies to receive compensation more quickly if their cloud infrastructure, software-as-a-service platforms, or other technology services experience downtime.
How the new coverage works
Standard insurance policies often require lengthy investigations to verify losses, which can delay relief for businesses facing immediate operational crises. The AIG solution changes this by using a mathematical formula to determine payment amounts. If a covered event occurs, the policy pays out based on the severity and duration of the outage. The trigger considers the potential financial impact of the disruption, subject to the specific terms and conditions of the agreement. This mechanism removes the need for a lengthy claims assessment process once a trigger event is confirmed.
Partnership with Parametrix provides the technical monitoring required to activate these payouts. The firm tracks over 9,000 technology providers and maintains proprietary data on more than 750 data centers globally. This network allows the partners to verify outages with precision. The policy also eliminates a monetary retention following the initial waiting period, which further reduces the financial burden on the insured during a recovery phase.

Market context and industry response
Enterprise reliance on cloud infrastructure has grown substantially. According to Cooperation Research Group, global spending on cloud infrastructure services reached $129 billion in the first quarter of 2026. This figure represents a 35% increase from the previous year and marks the highest growth rate recorded since 2021. As organizations shift more operations to the cloud, the financial risk associated with downtime has risen. AIG’s underwriting officer Tracie Grella noted that even short outages can create significant operational and financial challenges for companies relying on these systems.
Parametrix’s Chief Commercial Officer Sharon Haran emphasized the role of technology in this risk management approach. The solution leverages parametric structures to deliver protection for a specific operational risk in a scalable way. By combining AIG’s insurance expertise with Parametrix’s monitoring capabilities, the product offers a mechanism for carriers and brokers to bring additional value to clients. The solution is designed to complement broader risk management programs rather than replace them, allowing businesses to handle the complexities of cloud dependencies with greater confidence.
