Genentech and Roche broke ground on a $700 million manufacturing complex in Holly Springs, North Carolina, marking the first East Coast production site for the biotech firm.

The 700,000‑square‑foot plant will sit on a 100‑acre lot and is slated for completion in 2029. It is designed to make next‑generation metabolic medicines, including obesity treatments, using modern biomanufacturing technologies, advanced automation and digital tools.
Construction will generate more than 1,500 temporary jobs, while the operational phase will add over 400 permanent manufacturing positions. The development phase also supports roughly 1,900 jobs in total, according to the announcement.

Federal, state and local officials attended the ceremony. Among them were U.S. Rep. Deborah Ross, North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein, State Secretary of Commerce Lee Lilley, State Sens. Strategic reasons for the location
Genentech chose Holly Springs because of a skilled workforce, nearby academic institutions and proximity to other life‑science companies in the Raleigh‑Durham corridor. The site’s design includes space for future expansion, reflecting the company’s long‑term commitment to U.S. manufacturing.
A spokesperson noted the investment aligns with a broader $50 billion commitment to the administration’s initiatives for domestic manufacturing, infrastructure and research and development. “We are supportive of the goal to bring more pharmaceutical manufacturing to the United States,” the representative said, adding that the Department of Commerce’s U.S. Investment Accelerator helped clear regulatory hurdles.
The new facility will increase production capacity across Genentech’s network, aiming to improve supply‑chain resilience while maintaining a high‑volume, high‑efficiency and sustainable design. The plant’s footprint also positions it to serve the growing demand for metabolic drugs, a market that has seen rapid expansion in recent years.

Genentech’s parent, the Roche Group, is a multinational with a presence in both Europe and the United States. Founded nearly five decades ago, it focuses on discovering, developing, manufacturing and commercializing medicines for serious conditions. Its headquarters remain in South San Francisco, California.
