Ecobank named world’s best frontier markets bank 2026

Ecobank, the Togo-based financial group, has been named the World’s Best Frontier Markets Bank for 2026 by Global Finance magazine. The award, announced for the first time in the publication’s annual rankings, places it ahead of other frontier-market lenders worldwide. The designation recognizes the bank’s ability to connect local businesses in developing economies with global capital and trade networks.
How the winners are chosen
The magazine selects its World’s Best Banks based on performance over the past year, along with criteria such as reputation and management excellence. The editorial board makes the final decisions with input from corporate financial executives, analysts and bankers around the world. The full list of winners will appear in the October print and digital editions of the publication, as well as online.
Other global honorees revealed alongside the Togo-based group include Spain’s Santander as World’s Best Bank, Singapore’s DBS Bank as World’s Best Corporate Bank, and the State Bank of India as World’s Best Consumer Bank. Spain’s BBVA took the World’s Best Emerging Markets Bank award, while Canada’s CIBC Mellon was named World’s Best Sub-Custodian Bank.

Why Ecobank stood out
Joseph Giarraputo, founder and editorial director of the magazine, said in a statement that “in frontier markets, few institutions match Ecobank’s ability to connect local opportunity to global capital and trade flows, acting as a hub between Africa, Asia, Europe and other international markets.” He noted that the bank has built the reach, relationships and on-the-ground expertise that such markets require, and is actively working to reduce the cost and friction of cross-border trade.
Giarraputo added that the bank is “building the infrastructure necessary for frontier markets to flourish.” He also said that for more than three decades, corporate and banking leaders have trusted the publication’s Best Bank Awards to identify financial partners that deliver “superior capabilities, differentiated solutions and deep sector knowledge.”
What makes this award notable is that frontier markets — often defined as smaller or less-liquid economies that are still investable — have long struggled to attract consistent international capital. A bank that can bridge that gap, as it has done across more than 30 African countries, offers a rare combination of scale and local knowledge. Its network spans borders that many larger institutions avoid, making it a practical conduit for trade and investment flows that might otherwise stall.

Recognition and the ceremony ahead
The magazine will honor the bank and the other 2026 winners on the morning of October 17th at the annual World’s Best Bank Awards Ceremony in Dusit Thani, Bangkok, held during the IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings.
The selection process for the 2026 list drew on the publication’s long-running methodology, which has been used to evaluate banks globally since the early 1990s. The bank operates in more than 30 countries across sub-Saharan Africa and is one of the few pan-African banking groups with a presence in all major regions of the continent.
