OP and Qutwo Launch Quantum Computing Venture

OP Pohjola, a leading Nordic bank, and Qutwo Oy, a Finnish fintech startup, are launching a joint quantum computing and AI research unit in Helsinki. The unit aims to develop quantum-ready artificial intelligence tools for the banking and insurance sectors.

The new unit will focus on creating tools that meet the rising demands of banks and insurers to bolster their management structures and boost competitiveness by cutting costs. According to OP Pohjola CEO Timo Ritakallio, the combined quantum computing-AI unit will build a team of 60 specialists from regional and international talent.

Ritakallio described the partnership with Qutwo as a significant development for Pohjola, saying it has the potential to strengthen the company’s competitive position as a financial services pioneer. Qutwo CEO Peter Sarlin added that the partnership is a collaboration that can lead the way in leveraging technology and AI in the era of hybrid quantum computing.

Sarlin owns Qutwo and previously sold his company Silo AI Oy to Advanced Micro Devices for $665 million in July 2024. He emphasized that quantum computing and AI are no longer in the distant future and can provide a strategic competitive edge.

According to Ritakallio, quantum computing has the potential to enhance financial sector operations in various ways, including improvements to risk management, investment optimization, and fraud detection. Quantum computing and AI can offer substantial positive impacts by releasing the untapped power in these technologies to problem-solve and perform tasks more quickly and precisely than traditional computers.

For its part, Qutwo will build a customized research unit with access to its AI and quantum platform, Qutwo OS. This platform will enable the development of new financial services offerings that leverage advanced AI and quantum computing technologies.

Sarlin believes that this partnership is an example of the kind of approach that Europe can take to build sustainable technological leadership and sovereignty.

The partnership between OP Pohjola and Qutwo is expected to accelerate the development of a new generation of financial services offerings. With the combined expertise of both companies, they aim to meet the evolving needs of the financial sector.
