More than 40 local businesses, athletes, and education leaders attended STEM Crew LIVE Cardiff, an initiative designed to equip the next generation for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The event featured presentations by Baroness Sue Gray CBE, Jo Grindley of the 1851 Trust, Olympic sailor Hannah Mills OBE, and Mel Cameron, Cobham Ultra’s marketing lead. They explored how collaboration between businesses, government bodies, and community organizations can address Wales’ persistent STEM skills gap.

Participants stressed that resolving the shortage requires joint efforts across education systems, private industry, and policy makers. The discussion highlighted Wales’ need for coordinated support to develop future talent.

The two-day program hosted 300 secondary students at Techniquest, organized by the 1851 Trust with partners Cobham Ultra and Athena Pathway. Students gained hands-on experience with high-performance sailing technology through interactive workshops.

Activities included programming Sphero robots to follow a course resembling an America’s Cup race, testing sail designs in wind tunnels, and examining materials used in professional racing boats. These exercises demonstrated practical applications of STEM principles.

During the final “Careers Speed Networking” session, students engaged with professional athletes, engineers, designers, data specialists, and support staff. The event allowed participants to explore career options they might not have previously considered.

The 1851 Trust uses sport as a platform to make science tangible and expand awareness of STEM careers. By demonstrating how sailing performance depends on engineering and data analysis, the program illustrates science’s practical relevance.

The program’s content aligns with the Curriculum for Wales, which promotes curiosity, inquiry, and problem-solving while emphasizing science, technology, engineering, and digital skills in daily life.
